University students do not know how to take notes correctly because they do not know the right techniques to maximize the results of their work.

The only thing they do is write down the lessons. In practice, they try to listen to the lessons and transcribe the most important parts or record the audio and then unwind it by hand, losing hours and hours of work.

In both cases, only those who have good will, and are ready to invest a disproportionate number of hours, with respect to the actual commitment required, will manage to extricate themselves, in what appears, right from the start, an authentic broom …

In reality, compared to the two options mentioned above, there is a Third Way that is extremely more efficient than the others, allowing you to take notes in the best possible way !!!

The best way to take notes is to use mind maps because it allows you to listen, understand and store concepts in a single step. Convenient, isn’t it?

Mind Maps are graphic, clear, vivid and attractive representations of key concepts, structured hierarchically, and able to optimize understanding, synthesis and memory.

Learning, means quickly mastering the hierarchical structure of the lessons and texts, on which the discursive part depends, namely the part that the teacher uses during the lesson, and which will be proposed by ourselves, to answer the exam questions.

So even if we communicate in a linear way, we must learn in a hierarchical way, precisely because our mind works best in this way.

In summary, the Mind Maps, allow us a hierarchical view of entire subjects, and force us to take a very “active” attitude, during the lesson, to fully understand the explanation, identify the key concepts and the relationships between them.

As you can imagine, the time allocated to this activity is greatly reduced and the results are achieved much faster.

Now let’s see how to use this powerful tool correctly:

For the construction of your Mind Maps by hand, you will need white sheets, pencil, eraser and colored markers.

We need to divide the sheet according to the time we take notes. If we follow a one-hour conference, for example, we know that we have a quarter of a sheet available for every quarter of an hour.

The second step is to structure information with keywords so that the hierarchy of concepts is clear and defined.

A creative way to take notes manually through mind maps is to integrate work with the use of drawing.

How to do?

Simple: take the sheet and draw the idea you want to develop in the center. Each related idea corresponds to a branch that propagates from the center: draw the branch and write the word and / or draw the idea.

Let’s see how to do it step by step

In drafting the first draft of the Map, to be performed in real time, during the lesson, the draft may undergo variations, depending on how the teacher presents and elaborates on the various topics; therefore in this phase, it will be possible to modify the Map according to need.

The Map, will present the Title, that is the topic of the discussion, placed at the center of the sheet, and starting from it, the “Parent Branches”, with a clockwise arrangement, according to the clock hands, will take origin. The “Parenting Branches” will contain the most important Key Concepts, and will be distributed evenly in the sheet space, to facilitate the perception of information, and the subsequent memorization phase.

On the “Parenting Branches”, the “Rami Figli” will take shape, highlighting more detailed concepts, until reaching the “Rami Nipoti”, which will show us important details of the topic.

These “Branches” have a curvilinear structure, which simulates that of a neuron, and our way of thinking. Back home, we will color the various Branches, so that each group, consisting of Parent Branch – Child Branches – Grandchild Branches, is given the same color. This favors the immediate perception of entire groups of information, and facilitates the learning of all the key concepts, present in each group of “Branches”.

On the Mind Map, we will place “Trigger Key Words”, able to enclose and recall a concept. We can use “verbs”, viewable through a concrete image, and able to transfer the message directly. The same principles apply to the use of “Nouns” and “Adjectives”

On the Map, there are also Numbers, related to the Key Concepts, such as, for example, event dates, publication of works, birth or death of characters.

Mathematical and chemical formulas, theorem developments, and detailed notes, can be reported in specific spaces, and directly linked to the respective “Branches” of competence.

The “Keywords”, will be positioned above the “Branches”, and enriched by images, such as small drawings, made by us. The images are the mirror of our “Subjectivity”, and will favor speed and accuracy of memorization.

The advantage of building your Mind Maps by hand is to totally involve our senses, an element of great importance for learning.

The only disadvantage of hand-built maps is that, if it is necessary to modify the map, for example, to arrange the “branches” more evenly in the space, or to proceed with possible thematic investigations, we will have to reconstruct the whole map, with considerable loss of time. Moreover we must not forget that the Maps built on the sheet, can be damaged by accidental causes, such as, for example, a cup of coffee that spills over it

To avoid these problems we have different software for mind maps, some of which are free, others for a fee, with which to create our Mind Maps.

The best software for taking notes with mind maps is Imandmap because you will see your thoughts take shape in a latest generation project, with which you will be able to pass every university exam or work commitment.

You will learn visually, you can plan complexity and study much more effectively, saving energy and time.

I can guarantee that the benefits of the aforementioned software, as well as iMINDMAP10, repay the purchase cost to 1000 per 1, thanks to the considerable saving of time in taking notes at the University, allowing excellence to be achieved in the field of own university studies.
